Mrs Sarah Ruth Fletcher Briscoe who was born in Cowdensville in 1907, with

David Daniel Eley, who was born in 1875. He rented a farm in Avalon, which
is just a short distance from Cowdensville. He and his wife, Rosa Eley, had
sixteen children, several of whom were born in Avalon and attended school in
Cowdensville.
Cornelia Brown Matthews (right) with her mother, Betty Brown. They were
from Cowdensville. Betty Brown was 100 years old when photograph was
taken in 1984.

Joshua Williams hired Thurgood Marshall in 1935 to attempt to register
her and fellow classmate, Lucille Scott Jones, in the White high school in Catonsville, MD without success. It is believed that this was the first case
that led to the historic 1954 landmark school desegregation decision.

Cowdensville A.M.E. Church, built during the slavery era in 1857, it’s
original home was on Garrett Avenue in Cowdensville, but was moved to
its current location in 1907.
