"Response to Love" is the story of Mother Mary Lange, O.S.P, with biographical sketches of the Black women who followed her as major religious superiors of the Oblate Sisters of Providence.
The book, written by Maria M. Lannon, is the story of a Black nun who established the first United States based religious order of Black women. And this was done in a slave state, long before the Emancipation Proclamation.
With great Joy and Thanksgiving, the Josephite Pastoral Center published "Response to Love" in 1992
Mother Mary Lange is certainly a source of pride, a splendid role model for African American people. Mother Mary Lange's unwavering trust in the Providence of God, in the midst of great adversity, is surely an example for all people.
Mother Mary Lange's contribution to the American Catholic Church deserves a place in the History of Catholicism in the United States. Above all, Mother Mary Lange leads all people in faith and trust and love.
May her "Response to Love" then, be an inspiration to each one of us as we follow this faithful disciple in the struggle against ignorance, discrimination and injustice.
