SISTER MARIE INFANTA GONZALES, O.S.P.
(1977-1981)

A talented musician and New Orleans native, Sister Marie Infanta Gonzales earned a B.A. from Xavier University (New Orleans, LA) as well as a Masters degree in Music from Catholic University (Washington, DC).

Sister's ability and success in fund-seeking for anti-poverty programs made her a valuable member of several policy-making bodies. The Board of Trustees of her alma mater, Xavier University, led the list.

In her leadership role as fourteenth Superior General, Sister Marie Infanta is remembered for her care and concern for the aged and ill Sisters who lived in the infirmary. Sister was tireless in her efforts to enhance their lives by improving their surroundings. Frequent visits indicated the depth of her care and concern.

Sister Marie Infanta is credited with having presented, in Rome, in person, the revised Constitutions. Procedures were, thus, initiated which resulted in the final approval of the Constitutions in 1986.

The following words are taken from a position paper given to the General Assembly (August 16, 1984) by Sister Marie Infanta: "I continue to strive to possess the great joy of sharing, of living purely, simply the Gospel message, leaving it to the Spirit to do what He will. In the words of St. Augustine, 'Trust the past to mercy. Trust the present to Love. Trust the future to Providence.' God will help us. God will see us through trying times if we say as Mary said:'Lord, I am Thine. Do with me as Thou wilt.'"
